Homemade Drapery Pleater

As you know I try to make as many things myself as I can and I love "Trash To Treasure". Well I vaguely remember someone saying you could use cardboard to pleat drapes. So I tore apart a small cardboard box and removed the one layer of cardboard to expose the ribs.

The ribs are rather flimsy so I inserted bamboo skewers to give it stability so that the ribs would not collapse under pressure.

Then I placed my material over the ribs and in order to hold it down, I put more skewers in the spaces. (I taped the ends of the skewers to hold them down.) Then I sprayed the material with spray starch to soak it and left it to dry overnight.

When I removed the top layer of skewers, it looked pretty good.

Here is the first drape. Now I have to do the other one.

I think I will also look for a larger cardboard box to make a bigger pleater. This process seems to be work pretty well.

  1. You are just so clever! The pleats look great! Doesn't seem too difficult to do either... I like things like that! :)

  3. What a brilliant idea! puting those skewers in the rib of the cardboard, I have used this card before for curtains, works like a dream!
    Very Clever!
I have sort of leaned a bit towards the paper curtains now, but I will keep the skewer idea in mind
    Great Job
